In 2013, the last of the old blackboards were eased out, gradually replaced by hi-tech electronic smart boards. This, by the way, is no mean achievement for an institution that, in 1990, voluntarily eschewed tuition fees and opted for government aid in order to offer free education to thousands of girls, in keeping with its social and spiritual mission.
Next year, our beautiful old school building is due for a major overhaul, another monumental task that will require considerable funding. The school is also planning to upgrade its classrooms and facilities, ably guided by the current principal, Sr Arina Gonsalves.
And then, of course, there’s the daily challenge of equipping a thousand students for Life, not just with a sound education, but a sense of personal empowerment, sensitivity and social responsibility.
For over a century and a half, Fort Convent has done this and more, with a liberal, egalitarian, secular outlook that embraced us all. Now, perhaps, it is time to return the goodwill we so casually took for granted.
